Messenger automation: what it is, the three levels and how to choose

By the LeadRevive team · Updated 5th Nov, 2026 · Reviewed 5th Nov, 2026

The short answer

Messenger automation comes in three levels: fixed auto replies, rule-based flows with buttons and keywords, and AI agents that understand free text. A fixed reply only greets. Rules handle a short menu. The third level answers a real question in Bangla or Banglish. Choose the level that matches how your customers write.

The three levels of Messenger automation

"Messenger automation" and "Facebook Messenger chatbot" describe very different things. The clearest comparison is how much of the conversation each can handle without you.

1. Fixed auto replies2. Rule-based flows3. AI agents
Setup effortMinutes. Write one message.Hours to days. You draw every path and write every button and keyword.Hours. You add your products, prices and rules, then test.
What it handlesA greeting or an away message.A short menu: buttons, a few keywords, a form for name and phone.Free text: price, stock, size, delivery, bargaining, an order, a follow-up.
How it failsSends the same text to everyone, even when it makes no sense.Stalls when the customer types something you did not plan, or writes in Banglish. Can give a wrong answer or promise too much if its facts and limits are weak.
Cost modelFree inside Meta's tools.Often a monthly fee, sometimes based on contacts. Check each tool.Usually a monthly plan. Check what is counted, such as replies or chats.
Who it suitsA seller who answers by hand and only needs an acknowledgement.A seller with few products and predictable questions.A seller with many products and customers who write in their own words, day and night.

Level 1 is covered step by step in how to set up auto reply on a Facebook Page. The rest of this guide covers choosing between levels 2 and 3, and testing safely.

How a third-party tool connects to your Page

Fixed replies live inside Meta's own tools. Rule-based and AI tools are separate apps that connect to your Page through Meta's Messenger Platform. The sequence is simple.

  1. You log in with the Facebook account that manages your Page and approve what the tool may do. This is done by a Page admin.
  2. Meta gives the tool a Page access token, a key that lets it send and receive messages for that Page only.
  3. When a customer messages your Page, Meta sends a short notice (a webhook) to the tool instantly.
  4. The tool reads the conversation, decides on a reply, and sends it back through Meta.

The permissions a tool asks for are listed on Meta's overview page, and they include permission to send messages and to read Page conversations. Read the permission screen before you approve it. You can remove a tool's access at any time from your Facebook settings.

The Meta rules every seller works within

  • The customer starts the conversation. A business can message a person only after that person has messaged first.
  • There is a time window for replying. For most customer actions the window is 24 hours from the customer's last message. Messages sent to people outside the window are limited. Read the Messenger 24 hour rule before you plan follow-ups.
  • Responsiveness matters. Meta's policies include expectations about answering, and limits on how many messages an app can send.
  • Tools you connect must follow Meta's platform terms. A tool that spams your customers puts your Page at risk, not only the tool's name.

Meta updates these rules, so confirm any detail on the official page linked under Sources.

The risks, and a 10-message test before any customer sees the tool

  • Wrong answers. A bot that guesses a price, a size or a delivery time costs you an order or a refund.
  • Over-promising. A bot that invents a return policy or says "delivery tomorrow" when you cannot keep it creates complaints.
  • Spam reports. Too many messages, or messages people did not expect, can lead customers to report your Page.
  • No way to step in. If you cannot see the chat or take it over, a small mistake repeats.

Before any customer sees a tool, message your own Page from a personal account and run this test. It applies to levels 2 and 3.

  1. Send a plain greeting: "Hi" or "আসসালামু আলাইকুম".
  2. Ask the price of a real product by name.
  3. Ask the same thing in Banglish, for example "price koto?".
  4. Ask for a product you do not sell.
  5. Ask if it is in stock in a size or colour you know is finished.
  6. Bargain: "can you do it for less?" and see how low it goes.
  7. Ask something about delivery or return that you have not told it.
  8. Send a photo of a product.
  9. Place an order with a name, phone and address, and check the summary.
  10. Say "I want to speak to a person" and check that you can take over.

A pass means correct facts, no invented policy, an honest admission of what it does not know, and a clean handover to you. Fix anything that fails, then repeat the whole test.

How to choose the right level

  • You get a few messages a day and answer yourself: a fixed away message is enough.
  • Customers ask the same five questions in a menu-like way: a rule-based flow can work, provided you accept that it fails on anything unplanned.
  • Customers write free text, mix Bangla and English, bargain and ask about stock: level 3.
  • You sell at night or during sales rushes: the more messages arrive while you are away, the more level 3 matters.

Check also how the tool handles comments, orders and delivery, because a Messenger chat often ends in a parcel. For a deeper look at the AI option, read AI chatbot for a Facebook Page in Bangladesh. For terms like webhook or floor price, see the glossary.

How LeadRevive approaches it

LeadRevive is our product, and it operates at level 3. Once your Page is connected, a Sales Agent replies in Bangla, English or Banglish from your own products and Business Knowledge, and negotiates down to the floor price you set. It takes orders, a Payment & Collections Agent asks for the advance, and follow-ups reach customers who went quiet. You can take over any chat at any time. Confirmed orders go to your own Steadfast, Pathao or RedX accounts. See features and pricing, or get started.

Frequently asked questions

What is Messenger automation?

It is any tool that replies to Messenger messages for you. It ranges from one fixed away message, to button-and-keyword flows, to AI agents that read free text and answer like a person on your team.

Is a Facebook Messenger chatbot the same as an AI agent?

Not always. Many chatbots follow fixed rules and buttons. An AI agent reads what the customer wrote, including Bangla and Banglish, and builds an answer from your products and rules.

Can I automate Messenger for free?

Yes, at level 1. Meta's own tools offer an instant reply and an away message. Rule-based and AI tools usually have a paid plan, so check what each one charges and what it counts.

Is it safe to connect a tool to my Page?

It is as safe as the tool and the permissions you approve. Read the permission screen, run the 10-message test first, make sure you can take over any chat, and remove access if you stop using the tool.

Will automation get my Page banned?

Following Meta's rules is what protects your Page. Reply to people who messaged you, respect the reply window, and do not send unwanted bulk messages. Meta updates its rules, so confirm on the official page.
