The short answer
This glossary defines the terms you meet when you sell through Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. They are ordered as a newcomer would learn them, and each links to the guide that treats it in depth.
- Auto reply
- A message sent to a customer without a person typing it. It may be fixed text or an answer written by software, and it is the starting point for every term below. Read the guide →
- Instant reply
- Facebook's automatic message to someone who messages your Page for the first time. Everyone receives the same fixed text, and it does not understand a question. Read the guide →
- Away message
- An automatic message sent when your Page's messaging status is set to Away. It can say when to expect an answer or where to find other information. Read the guide →
- Greeting message
- A fixed welcome text. In the free WhatsApp Business app it is set in the Tools tab and sent to people who message you. It does not understand the customer's question. Read the guide →
- Saved reply (quick reply)
- Text you save once and insert yourself when needed. In the WhatsApp Business app it carries a short shortcut word, such as "price". A person still decides when to send it. Read the guide →
- Chatbot
- Software that answers customers in a chat. It is either rule-based or AI-based, and the two behave very differently. Read the guide →
- Rule-based chatbot
- A chatbot whose paths you draw yourself. It responds to buttons and fixed keywords and says only what you wrote. When a customer types something unplanned, it stalls. Read the guide →
- AI chatbot
- A chatbot that reads free text, in Bangla, English and Banglish, works out what the customer wants, and builds a reply from the products and rules you provide. Its flexibility is the reason it needs firm limits. Read the guide →
- AI agent
- One AI worker with a defined job, such as answering product questions or following up with silent customers. Several agents can work on the same chats together. Read the guide →
- AI business suite
- One system in which several AI agents, each with a defined job, work on your customer chats together with an inbox, an orders list, a product and stock list, and reports. The defining idea is one place, not separate tools. Read the guide →
- Automation
- Software performing a repeated chat job for you, such as replying, tagging a lead or sending a follow-up. It runs from fixed messages, to rules, to AI. Read the guide →
- Inbox
- The single place where customer chats arrive and are answered. Meta Business Suite has an Inbox, and other tools have their own. Read the guide →
- Messenger
- Facebook's chat app. When a customer messages your Facebook Page, the conversation takes place in Messenger and arrives in your Page inbox. Read the guide →
- Meta Business Suite
- Meta's free tool for managing a Page and its messages in one place. Its Inbox includes automations such as an instant reply and an away message. Read the guide →
- Page
- A Facebook profile for a business rather than a person. Customers message the Page, and tools that connect to Messenger work through it. Read the guide →
- Professional account
- An Instagram account type, either business or creator. Meta's documentation states that the Instagram APIs work with a professional account, so a personal account cannot be used with connected tools. Read the guide →
- Private reply
- One private message that a Page can send to a person who commented on its post. It must be sent within 7 days of the comment, only one can be sent, and the chat continues only after the person answers. Read the guide →
- Comment-to-DM
- A flow in which you answer a comment in public, then send that person one private message to open the sales chat. It rests on the private reply, so the same limits apply. Read the guide →
- 24-hour messaging window
- For most customer actions, your Page may message a customer freely for 24 hours after they last interacted with it. After that, only the limited options Meta allows apply. Each new customer action opens a fresh window. Read the guide →
- Human Agent window
- A separate 7-day allowance that Meta describes for cases where a real person is handling the chat and needs more time to respond. It is not a way to send promotions. Read the guide →
- Human takeover
- Opening a chat and replying yourself, so the bot or AI stops writing while you do. A well-built tool lets you take over in one click and hand the chat back later. Read the guide →
- Autopilot
- A setting in which the AI answers a chat on its own, without a person approving each reply. You can turn it off and take over any chat yourself. Read the guide →
- Floor price (minimum price)
- The lowest price you will accept for a product. In a price negotiation the AI should never agree to anything below it, and should ask you first instead. Read the guide →
- Lead
- A person who has shown interest in what you sell but has not yet bought, for example someone who asked the price. A lost lead is someone who said no, or stopped answering after your planned follow-ups. Read the guide →
- Lead follow-up
- Messaging a lead again to answer their doubt and help them decide. The most important follow-ups should go out while the messaging window is still open. Read the guide →
- Broadcast
- One message sent to many customers at once. Meta's messaging rules allow messages only inside the window, so a broadcast cannot reach people who did not write to you. Read the guide →
- F-commerce
- Facebook commerce: selling products through a Facebook page and its chat instead of a website. The customer finds a post, messages the page, confirms an order and pays, and a courier delivers the parcel. Read the guide →
- Cash on delivery (COD)
- The customer pays the courier in cash when the parcel arrives. It is convenient for buyers, but it invites fake orders and returns, because the customer risks nothing when ordering. Read the guide →
- Advance payment
- Money the customer pays before the parcel ships, such as the delivery charge by bKash or Nagad, with the rest paid on delivery. If the parcel comes back, the delivery cost is at least covered. Read the guide →

- WhatsApp Business app
- A separate, free app for small businesses. Its Tools tab offers simple features such as a greeting message, an away message and quick replies, all of which send fixed text. Read the guide →
- WhatsApp Business Platform (API)
- The official route to real WhatsApp automation, in which software connects through WhatsApp's own channel. It can reply, route chats and send approved templates, and it has its own rules and pricing. Read the guide →
- Message template
- A pre-written message that WhatsApp must approve before a business can send it. On the Platform, templates are how a business starts a chat outside the 24-hour window. Read the guide →
- Banglish
- Bangla written in English letters, such as "dam koto bhai". Many customers type this way, so a tool should read it as well as Bangla script and English. Read the guide →
